I’ve downsized our “agency team” and parted ways with our retainer clients. Why? Well, a lot happened in 2015. Some of you knew what was going on quietly behind the curtain, but to the majority of the those looking from the outside it may have seemed like I’ve tossed in the towel. Personally, I was dealing with my mother going through Cancer and watching my sister suffer from the disease of addiction. Russell Brandt was right when we wrote, “you await the phone call. There will be a phone call.” Sadly, I received that phone call on August 15th last year. No amount of therapy could possibly prepare me for that moment. Suddenly running a small business of organized chaos seemed insignificant.

While I can’t rationalize if my sister’s tragic ending was preventable or not, I can take from it that raw feeling that overcomes you– feeling angst, sadness and relief all at once. I funneled those emotions to help bring me clarity in how I need to move forward. As I’ve learned, life has an expiration date, and you shouldn’t spend it being completely stressed. I’ve taken from this to put forth a worth ethic that makes me happy and not finding wins and achievements for others. I’m more confident to have been able to come to terms with my new direction, and to have embraced the exciting uncertainty of the future.

Sometimes, you just need to make a pivot and move forward with the strength and courage that landed you where you started in the first place.

I’m happy to share that my mother is on the road to remission from her Cancer with another clean scan that she received this past Friday. My sister was a straight-A, full scholarship, Dean’s List overachiever who simply lost her way to which no one can relate to but her. I now accept that there is nothing more my family and I could have done, as it’s now irrelevant. We just love her for the person she was and all the amazing moments we had together.

Maybe this is an over-share, but we all have our shi*t we go through and for me it’s a way of expressing that I’m simply human.

The past few months I’ve taken some time off to refocus on what projects made sense to pursue. I like a beginning, middle and an end; creating an experience that subliminally is brand evangelized among your curated community. It brings me much enthusiasm to share I’ve put my focus on building out the TechStyle NYC Experience into a series of 5 events shared during NYFW, SXSW, a Summer build-out and LAFW. I’ve also teamed up with Sabina Hitchen to put together a two-day weekend workshop (Feb. 27th and Feb. 28th) that allows product based businesses access to our rolodex of Rockstar editors, producers, influencers and experts all in a live intimate setting. For everyone who always wanted to sit down and “pick our brains” well here’s your chance.

Looking forward to hearing from you and allowing me this honest reflection. I think we owe it to ourselves to be more genuine and humble with each other.

Monthly App Roundup http://janinejust.com/2015/09/25/monthly-app-roundup/ Fri, 25 Sep 2015 16:30:49 +0000 http://janinejust.com/?p=12345

During #NYFW, we found a few things that we realized we couldn’t get through the week without. With this month’s app roundup, we bring you the apps we realized we can’t go without.

Donde Fashion

Shop right from your smartphone and take advantage of daily sales with Donde Fashion. Find exactly what you want, when you want it. The app will take any ideas you have and present you with a database of any and every selection you might’ve had in mind. Purchase your dream wardrobe in seconds or put it on your wish list and wait for everything to go on sale. Ready to shop for the closet collection you’ve been waiting for? Download it on the App Store now- hurry, the sales are calling!

Boomerang NYC

You’re a super busy New Yorker who orders in every night after work and has the time to Netflix-binge, but not time to do your laundry. It’s ok- Boomerang NYC gets it. Just download the app for free on the App Store and bam, an on-demand laundry service right at your fingertips. The Boomerang crew will pick up your items to be laundered in their super cool tricycle (still envious of that) and don’t worry about having to trudge out to pick it up, they’ll deliver your laundry right back to you. Unlike most laundromats in NYC, Boomerang runs on your schedule…and budget. Open from early morning to late night, seven days a week, the app ensures they’ll beat a brick-and-mortar’s price. Put the excuses to rest, Boomerang is on their way.

Nobody wants to carry around a clunky walkie-talkie when they’re trying to run an event. Plus, with smartphones these days, what they can double into is amazing. The norm is to use them as cameras, mini t.v.s, radios, mp3’s, oh and as actual phones. But did you ever think to use them as a walkie-talkie? Luckily, Zello did. Available for free download on the App Store, Google Play, Microsoft, Blackberry, and even your PC, the push-to-talk app is what the PR world never knew they needed. Create multiple channels, give yourself a creative alias (or go with your own name,) and watch your events become a breeze.

hootsuite-black-logoImage via Twitter Tools Book

Live-tweeting is just a whole lot easier with the Hootsuite app! Connect all of your accounts to one single app and let your social media maven self run free. On the go? Schedule tweets right from your smartphone or tablet- it’s that easy. Connect with fellow tweeters beyond Twitter. Hootsuite makes it easy for you to find your mentions, keep track of who favorited your tweets, and makes it easy to upload pictures, attach your location, and tag others. The App Store and Google Play have just what you need get started. Just remember: don’t go #hashtag crazy on everyone.

Find your fashion inspo, control your events, and get the job done. Let us know what apps you’re loving on Twitter: @JanineJustInc.

Recap, Remixed: TechStyle NYC on September 14, 2015 http://janinejust.com/2015/09/17/recap-remixed-techstyle-nyc-on-september-14-2015/ Thu, 17 Sep 2015 18:17:07 +0000 http://janinejust.com/?p=12292 This season’s TechStyle NYC Experience was unlike any other.

The ultimate retreat for high-end influencers, media, and shamelessly chic fashionistas came back for another full day of fashion, tech, beauty, and lifestyle on Monday, September 14th, 2015. The experience was hosted by fellow fashionisto, TV personality and Style Expert, Noah Levy at Studio Arte.

The roster of influencers included some loyal TechStyle NYC faces like Courtney Kornegay of The Courtwalk, Emily and Abigail of The Wanderlust Girls, Alexandra Dieck of Lexicon of Style, Bianca Jade of MizzFit, and actor Malik Yoba, and new ones including Miss New York, Nicole Kulovany along with actress and comedian, Carey Reilly.

Doors opened at noon where guests were treated to a special gift from Donde Fashion with a quick download of their new shopping app. The Beauty Bliss Bar featured complimentary makeup touchups courtesy of Stylisted, an in-home beauty service, along with dry styles and specialty braids by Tressenoire, and True Concepts Organic. The Bolden Company provided nourishing hair and body oils. The Style Media Closet showcased designs by Meredith Marks, T. Tandon, Rejected Hearts Club, and Titika Active Couture. Swggr, an app that rewards fashionistas/os for their style hung out for the day and was in search for trend-setting brand ambassadors. Didn’t get to speak to them? Simply let us know and we’ll put you in touch. Mavatar showcased their Carts for Cause from celeb Stylists including Phillip Bloch, Derek Warburton and of course TechStyle NYC’s host, Noah Levy. The peach parlor provided the ultimate bra-ha moment to attendees. Shapeways caused quite the stir with their 3D printed bags, jewelry designs and breathtaking masks. HandL showed us how we can remain hands-free- yes, while still holding our phones.

Attendees were treated to beverages from SoundTea and cold brew coffees and cocktails from Kopi Trading Co.; Our friends over at Warsteiner served up their Premium German Pilsner in gorgeous gold-accent glasses that everybody got to keep. The cocktail reception featured a Do-It-Yourself mini-bar with an assortment of VeeV vodka that paired amazingly well with the flavors of SoundTea. Brode– the world’s first hydration vitamin hooked everybody up with some packs to keep them hydrated throughout the party and to avert guests from a next-day hangover. The team over at Osteria del Principe provided sandwiches while Dosha Pops and Stroopwafel provided some great snacking . Got a little rowdy and spilled a bit of your drink on your favorite outfit? BoomerangNYC was there, tricycle and all, to take care of the blunders to give out some credits to try their on-demand dry-cleaning and laundry service.

The positivity was in the air at the Mood Lounge with Lifetherapy where guests got to Choose Their Mood and were gifted fun mood bracelets. The Thync Bar, allowed guests to experience a calm or energy burst with their wearable tech. Can we say #PartyVibes?

Be sure to keep up with the experience by following the hashtag #TechStyleNYC on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Visit our official website for updates, event news, and more information on the brands. Up next? TechStyle NYC hits LAFW. Want to get involved? Let us know.

The #TechStyleNYC Takeover http://janinejust.com/2015/09/02/the-techstylenyc-takeover/ Wed, 02 Sep 2015 16:41:16 +0000 http://janinejust.com/?p=12267 Some people name drop, but we date drop. We’ve probably invaded your social feed every day with the date September 14th and you may be wondering exactly what it means. It is a Monday, but it’s a Monday during our favorite time of the year: #NYFW.

Rather than spending any downtime in a crowded Starbucks while watching everybody Instagram their coffee or sitting in gridlock traffic for more than an hour, we offer the fashion industry elite a chic way to remove themselves from the madness we all know and love of NYFW. Each season, our team collectively produces the TechStyle NYC Experience, where our invite-only guests can escape the chaos and discover the “New, Next and Now” in the fashion, beauty and tech as they indulge in pampering amenities and mingling opportunities with fellow VIPs between runway shows.

The Experience will feature unique activations that bridge together fashion and tech from brands including Thync, Swggr, and Shapeways, a 3D printing service that can bring a simple idea to life. The Style Media Lounge will house the likes of Meredith Marks, Rejected Hearts Club, and Titika, imitating the dream-set of an ideal walk-in closet. Just like at our #SummerofCreeds weekend getaway, we are bringing back the Peach Parlor with basics and lingerie brand Peach and educate attendees on the new way to shop for intimates on their platform.

This season, we even brought in a charity component to curate into the series, with Mavatar’s Cart for CAUSE. We’ll be revealing our celebrity stylist’s carts allowing you to shop their picks from the TechStyle NYC Event. A portion of proceeds from those purchases will be benefiting the American Childhood Cancer Organization.

To help you get through the fast-paced week, take some Brode for the road to keep you hydrated and a Sound Tea to keep you at peace.

Want to join us? Please register at TechStyle NYC for approval on admission to the full day event. For now, follow the feed at #TechStyleNYC. See you soon.

It will be the easiest and hardest years of your life. What you think maybe in store, may not be exactly what you think it is. A huge tip that you might not know for college? Take all of the shortcuts or help you can! Here’s a few apps that you should have before your first class begins!

Study Buddy

Screen Shot 2015-08-06 at 1.16.58 PMImage via AppStore

This app promises to improve your study habits. It will keep track of your distractions, as long as you’re completely honest with it. So at the end of your study session it gives you personal feedback on when you get more distracted and by what. You can then use this feedback to become more efficient so you can better manage your time. Download Study Buddy for free through the iTunes App Store in time for upcoming semester.

What is college without rejoicing that you found a textbook that’s under $100 in your school’s bookstore?! I’ve yet to encounter such a book, that’s where Chegg comes in. This app allows you to save the not-so-small fortune you would’ve spent at the bookstore. You can rent textbooks or access the electronic versions when they are available. Ready to start buying your books at a better price? Get the Chegg app for free through the iTunes App Store or Google Play!

There will come that time, before you’ve found your first college job, when your bank accounts will really take a hurting; it’s usually around the second week of classes. Hopefully, you’re parents will take mercy on you and send you a few dollars to tie you over. If you’ve travelled a few miles away from home for college, Venmo will get that money to you in a few seconds, so open up the App Store or Google Play and get to downloading this game-changing app.

Screen Shot 2015-08-06 at 1.17.21 PMImage via AppStore

You’re a college student now, and your shiny new school email allows you to try out amazon prime for free for 6 months! That means everything on prime will be at your doorstep in 2 days for free. As one who’s turned down the perfect pair of jeans before having Prime because I couldn’t justify a $10.00 shipping fee, amazon prime saved my life and now they do groceries. Take it from me, and use Amazon Prime any time you can!

Your school’s app

Screen Shot 2015-08-06 at 1.17.41 PM

If your school has an app then chances are they’ve stuffed it full of helpful information you will need to get around and survive on campus. Most school apps include a map of the campus buildings, campus dining menus, and usually a link to your school’s official student portal. Along with your school’s app on the first day of classes you’ll probably hear about blackboard, it’s where your professors are gonna list your grades and send announcements to your class, but also where they expect you to upload all those essays. It’ll be good to have it on your phone to quickly check grades or check the room number on a lecture.

College is not easy but it can be a bit easier with these essential apps. The real troopers are the ones who went through college before these apps were around.

Let Us Introduce You To..#BrodeBenefits http://janinejust.com/2015/08/06/let-us-introduce-you-to-brodebenefits/ Thu, 06 Aug 2015 16:39:41 +0000 http://janinejust.com/?p=12210 Your favorite alternative to sugary energy drinks loaded with calories that claim to be full of electrolytes, and the world’s first hydration vitamin, the Brode Electrolyte Vitamin, has recently launched a campaign that has some major benefits.

Brode is set on doing more than just changing how and why you take vitamins. The vitamin that prevents dehydration, that you can take any where, anytime, with any drink (yes, even a beer,) is encouraging all of it’s users to help others, while helping themselves. Founder of Brode, Marc Brodeur, has insight on community and startups, which has allowed this campaign to come to fruition. Through creating the #BrodeBenefits campaign, he was able to see the bigger picture for some of his passions: charity and small business.

For every time somebody hashtags #BrodeBenefits on Instagram and Twitter, Brode will donate $1 to Kiva, a non-profit organization with a mission to connect people together through lending to alleviate the burden of poverty. By sharing the hashtag, you are empowering somebody else to empower themselves with financial support, in turn, supporting small entrepreneurs worldwide.

All it takes is a quick action to make a difference. Before you hit the gym, grab a drink (or two), or get on your flight, snap a pic of your Brode and include the hashtag; continue to help somebody else, by helping yourself.

Get the “IN” on LinkedIN http://janinejust.com/2015/08/03/get-the-in-on-linkedin/ Mon, 03 Aug 2015 15:30:39 +0000 http://janinejust.com/?p=12202 New to LinkedIn? Getting bored with your current profile? Don’t know how to use it to your advantage? If any apply, good news is..you are not alone. Although we haven’t found the single best LinkedIn user or profile, we have certainly found a few. Forbes, Business Insider, USA Today, and many more have given their audiences “the” helpful tips on how to make the best of your LinkedIn profile…and I am here to give you the BEST of the best tips. Let’s get started!

  1. A picture is worth a thousand words…so cliche but also so true. When picking your profile photo make sure it’s a good one. No casual snapshots, nothing blurry, and definitely no selfies! Choose an inviting image, something that flatters you but also shows sophistication, don’t get too crazy. A simple headshot will suffice!
  2. Utilize your headline! In general, LinkedIn users use this space to display their job title and company name, try something different? Perhaps write a few short, yet specific, sentences that show what sets you apart from your competition. If done correctly, you will grab viewer’s attention and hopefully make more connections.
  3. Buzzwords, huge no-no. Words such as responsible, effective, strategic, patient, organizational, leader are to be avoided. Get creative when describing not only yourself but your responsibilities. This will reflect positively on you and let’s face it.. buzzwords are buzzkills.
  4. Consistency. Be consistent throughout your profile, this can be applied in multiple aspects. Bullet points, always have 3 to 5, you can’t have 3 for one job experience and 4 for another, pick a number and stick to it. Strengths- know them and be redundant. Pick your top strengths that you want a viewer to recognize you by and use them throughout your profile.
  5. But be selective! Don’t be too wordy, every character counts. Keep it short and simple get to the point while still being descriptive, easier said than done. Get rid of jobs you had earlier in your career, quality is better than quantity especially if past experiences aren’t adding to your profile.
  6. Follow Up. You meet new people everywhere you go, and following up with those contacts is crucial. Whether you met at a work event, socially, or by accident, why not connect with them on LinkedIn? They don’t say it’s a small world for no reason.
  7. Be a social butterfly. Just because you get a request from someone you don’t know, doesn’t mean you shouldn’t accept it. This will not help you get found, it sells LinkedIn Premium. When employers are looking to hire, the results of their searches show people with 1st level connections first, then 2nd level, 3rd level, and so on.
  8. Be a groupie. Don’t be afraid to join groups! This will allow you to connect with people who are not contacts. By joining groups this gives you an opportunity to reach out and invite them to your network.

Take these tips to heart, and make adjustments to your profile accordingly. LinkedIn can seem intimidating but it’s on your side. Now that you have the “in,” get on LinkedIn.
